Sail, sail far away she said pushing him away after feeling his rough embrace for what she hoped would not be for the last time. Without so much a quiver on his faced he turned and walked towards the sloop that would take him out to sea. Of his own volition he was among the crew of an expedition with would attempt to find passage north through to the Indies. The journey would take him through a barren white maze of island and straits where the cold winds howled the devil’s voice. Twenty years past, a Danish expedition with 65 men had made the attempt which made little distance and left only 3 alive. Why was he subjecting her to such agony? Why could he not get a position on a merchant ship or start a business, the money from her father was more than sufficient?
… As the ice slowly suffocated the ship, contorting, and splitting its sides his stomach rumbled he wondered if they would freeze before eating each other.
